Aladdin

As we all know the film is a live adaptation of Disney’s animated classic Aladdin from 1992. The film is based in the kingdom of Agrabah where a small thief Aladdin(Aladdin (Mena Massoud) falls in love with its princes’ Jasmine(Naomi Watt). 

One of the biggest plus points is undoubtedly Will Smith’s performance. He as the Genie is magical, funny and full of life. Will Smith’s body language as the Genie is top notch and the spectacular special effects done on him makes his role look even more interesting.

One the whole, Aladdin is an extravagant fantasy drama which has some spectacular visual effects and thrills. But the presence of an excess of songs and dragged second half go against the film.

Despite being one of the most unambitious tentpole films of the year, the live-action Aladdin is - by far - the oddest movie that director Guy Ritchie has ever made. And remember, he once made a rom-com for his ex-wife Madonna.

This isn’t to say that the new Aladdin is a failure - it most certainly isn’t - but I’d imagine this is simply a case of Ritchie trying to get back into Hollywood’s good books after the back-to-back box office failure of his last two movies.

Aladdin is - and depending on your familiarity with the original animated film, this may or may not come as a surprise - an outright musical.
